CHIP Reauthorization Information for FAMIS and FAMIS MOMS

If you received a letter from the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) in December 2017 telling you that your FAMIS or FAMIS MOMS coverage may end on January 31, 2018, we are informing you that the date has been extended until February 28, 2018. You still do not need to do anything.

On December 21, Congress approved some short term funding to help keep the FAMIS and FAMIS MOMS programs running through the early part of 2018. This gives Virginia one more month of funds to continue providing benefits for you or your child, but will not change the end result unless Congress reauthorizes the program or additional funding is allocated. If Congress does not renew the CHIP/FAMIS program before February 28, 2018, Virginia will run out of funds and we will be forced to close the program.

We are hopeful that Congress will act to renew the CHIP program for a longer period of time before February 28 and that there will be no interruption to your or your child’s health coverage, but there is no guarantee that Congress will act by that date.

If Congress does not renew the program or provide any more additional short term funding, we will send you another notice telling you when FAMIS and FAMIS MOMS will shut down and providing you additional information.

While we wait for Congress to act, below are some Frequently Asked Questions that may help you plan ahead.
